This song was written around 1982 by Tom Penick. It is a rock and roll trucking song. The mention of the 55mph speed limit is in reference to the 1974 Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act that set the maximum national speed limit to 55 mph. This was a fuel-saving measure in response to gasoline shortages during the 1973 oil crisis. The act was repealed in 1995 and the states were once again in charge of setting their speed limits. So it no longer applies, but we are not changing the song.
Keep on, running down the highway
The law better leave me alone
I'm really just a business man
I work hard to survive
I've got to move my load on down the road
And it's hard a 55
55, better move it on over
And I'll be moving along
I'll be running down the highway
The law better leave me alone
Solo
I'm searching for the city lights
At the end of every run
I like to see the nighttime come alive
To the sound of a traveling song
Traveling song, better move it on over
And I'll be moving along
I'll be running down the highway
The law better leave me alone
Solo
