The Cedar Park Splash Jam is an annual event sponsored by the City of Cedar Park, marking the celebration of labor day, the end of summer and the closing of the swimming pool at the park. The tradition began about 2004 when the July 4th Festival was rained out and the City was left with an unused cache of fireworks. The solution was to hold another festival around labor day and set off the fireworks at that time. The event has continued to be held annually since.

Admission to Splash Jam and the musical performance is free but there are fees associated with some activities. The event kicks off with a washer tournament at 4 pm with the rest of the event starting at 5 pm. The festival features live music, inflatables, and a fireworks display. Fees apply for face painting, food concessions, mechanical bull, carnival games, hamster balls, quad jump, super slide, rock wall, caricatures and spinner ride. See Flyer.

  • Sunday, May 25, 2014   Rabbit Hill Cantina.   This was Rabbit Hill's pre-Memorial Day celebration with Duke Davis and Buckshot. The weather was mild and cloudy. There was strong thunderstorm activity off to the west but it didn't affect us other than some light sprinkles late in the evening.

Duke Davis played from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. He plays cowboy songs, many of which he wrote. Duke actually IS a cowboy and he tells stories about the songs which makes it a genuine and interesting experience. Kurt Baumer, the fiddle player, was excellent.

After the Duke Davis show was an open mic session where Tom Penick played several songs.

  • Sunday, March 30, 2014   This was our first performance of the 2014 season at the Gazebo in the San Gabriel Park in Georgetown, TX. We played from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

The weather was pleasant but it was quite windy. There were several people flying kites in the park but the microphones picked up the wind noise.

We took several breaks because Jeff was tiring quickly due to his chemotherapy treatments. We took a long supper break for Rodger. We introduced a new original song, That's What She Said and played about 20 songs. Anthony Drake and Steve Whitfield each played guitars and sang solo during breaks.

Tomzap at the Gazebo

  • Sunday, March 2, 2014   we were scheduled to play at the Leander Car Show in Leander, TX, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate. Although it was pleasant when we arrived at 7:30 am, a cold front moved in and the temperature quickly dropped and the wind picked up and it was sprinkling. Jim Karnes was reluctant to call off the car show since the February show had been called off due to weather. So we set up and prepared to play. But there were not many people showing up and Stan Holcomb arrived from the City of Leander and said it was cancelled.

Since we were already set us we decided to test our limits and play a song in the cold. We played Come and See the Show and my fingers went completely numb. By this time I think it was about 45°F and windy. We were ready to call it quits but got a request to play another song, Go Go Power Rangers. This came from people who were holed up in the City Chambers where it was warm with the door cracked open so they could hear us. So we did play that song and then packed up and left.

We are scheduled to play the May 4 car show so it should be warmer then and hopefully not raining.

Brrr... It's about 45°F, damp and windy

  • Saturday, April 13, 2013   9:00 pm at the Kappa Sigma fraternity in Georgetown, TX.

It has been many years since I (Tom) have played here and it was good to be back. This was the Alumni weekend so there were Kappa Sig friends from the past like Thomas Hambleton, Chris Matheson, and Bob Lane. "Townies" from the old days, John Williams, Bill Russell, Beth Forest, and Dee Forest also came. We played until about 11:30 and then some of the fraternity musicians took over. The party got started in earnest around midnight and then at 2 am the campus police came and shut down the band as expected. After that they played the stereo almost as loud and danced while we packed up the equipment. We left at 3:30 am but the party lasted until dawn. The Kappa Sigmas are still SU's leading party fraternity.

  • Saturday, June 23, 2012   12:00 noon at the Gazebo in the San Gabriel Park in Georgetown, TX

This was our fifth time to play in public. The weather was hot and dry, somewhat windy. We played Sonic Vortex for the first time and we skipped doing One Day at a Time.

We started earlier in the day because of the heat in June and made it a pot luck lunch as well. We invited friends and family and also made it a company picnic for Ringdale, Inc. We recorded the concert using a new Zoom H4N.
